The body of water in front of Bellano, between the Centre and the “Alto Lario” (Upper Lario), offers an ideal regatta course thanks to the wind patterns and the width of the stretch of lake water: the spot benefits from favorable weather conditions to the practice of the sailing sport, as the constant presence of a thermal breeze (the Breva), present year round (in particular in the Summer months), starts blowing in a southerly direction around midday and remains constant throughout the day.
Here in the 1800’s took place the first sailing events organized by the “Regate Club Lariano”, an association expressing Milan’s nobility and upper middle class of the period. Roughly 100 years later, in 1970, a group of young people from Bellano, sailing enthusiasts, in a very different social context, gave life to a sports association, the “Circolo Vela Bellano”, open to everyone, aimed at making possible for anyone not able to afford a personal boat to practice the sailing sport.
The new association was immediately very active, obtaining the F.I.V. acknowledgment, and implementing year-on-year its structures and increasing its members, today nearly 500.
The sailing school, authorized by the FIV and by the “Centro CONI di avviamento all sport”, and its given special attention and commitment.
The regattas organization, also thanks to the participation at the Multilario association with other Sailing Clubs Lariani, includes national, european and world championships. However the promotional activity isn’t neglected, with social and zone regattas, and the traditional “Coppa Bellano” (Bellano Cup) established in 1901.
